Importance: As the Girlfriend thinks about breaking up with the Jake, she indicates that perhaps that was always the direction their relationship was headed. This quote also refers to the end of the novel where one of the people involved in the dialogue tell the other that he should read the end of Jake’s notebook first, and then go back to the beginning.
