Summary
In this section, Jake and the Girlfriend finally arrive at his parents’ house. Even though they cannot see because it is dark and it is also cold and beginning to snow, Jake insists they walk around the farm first. They visit the sheep barn where the Girlfriend notices the sheep seem spiritless in the unsubstantial shelter. She is shocked when she sees two dead lambs stacked against an outside wall of the barn. Jake next shows her an empty pen where his family once kept pigs. The last two pigs they owned become infested with maggots and had to be killed. Jake describes how the two appeared to be comfortably lying in their pen. When his father looked closer, he could see where the maggots were feeding on them.
