Point of View
The novel is told from the two alternating perspectives of the main characters: Lena and Campbell. Lena’s perspective voices the first chapter, and Campbell’s perspective gives us the second chapter. The chapters continue to switch back and forth between the two girls until the end of the novel, which also concludes with Lena’s voice.
Lena is a Black teenager, and her chapters are written by Black author, Kimberly Jones, while Campbell is a white teenager, and her chapters are written by a white author, Gilly Segal. The partnership of the authors in pursuit of creating a novel which includes “authentic” voices of race in this novel is as crucial to its mission as the conflicting perspectives of the two characters, who often see simple situations in completely different lights because of their race.
