Summary

In Chapter 17, the girls reach Seventh Avenue, which is bursting with activity. Black Lives Matter protestors mingle with anti-Black protestors wearing confederate flags. Bars, clubs, and restaurants are open and overflowing into the sidewalk and street. Music blares from all directions. Campbell asks if the street is always like this, and Lena says it is always a popular area but it is not usually anything like this. Marcus tells Lena to call Black, but he does not answer. Lena is embarrassed, but Campbell comforts her by suggesting that maybe Black simply cannot hear his phone ringing. Marcus starts to lecture Lena about Black some more, but suddenly a car crashes into the street and hits a Black woman. The crowd pulls the white driver out of the car and another large fight begins. The girls get separated from Marcus and find themselves alone...
