Animals

Animals, particularly Davy’s dog Fred, are symbolic of a safe middle ground between Davy and other people. Due to the repression of his feelings that he has learned from his emotionally distant parents, Davy channels his affection towards animals, which can be seen in his relationship with Fred, his interest in the Central Park Zoo, and even his attempts to interact with a taxidermied coyote in the Museum of Natural History. This last instance is an example of how his love for animals forms a barrier to emotional connection. However, Fred also acts as a bridge to Davy’s relationship with Altschuler, as spending time with Fred allows the two boys the chance to bond.
