Chapters 17 through 19 Summary

In chapter seventeen, Carley and her mom meet Dr. Chaffoo. He explains the process by which he proposes to reconstruct Carley's face. The process will take three surgeries stretched out over eighteen months. He will take some of the bone from Carley's scalp but promises he will have to shave only a small segment of her head to make the graft. The procedure sounds painful and Carley can tell her mother is also put off by the details. Then Dr. Chaffoo uses digital imaging to show Carley a picture of what she'll look like following the surgery. She looks at the picture and says that, for the first time in years, Carley Mattea could be pretty. Carley's mom begins to cry and they agree to the process.
