Golden State Killer
The Golden State Killer, also known as the Early Bird Rapist, the East Area Rapist, and the Original Night Stalker, is a murderer and serial rapist who terrorized various places in California from 1974 to 1986. He is connected to several murders and over fifty rapes, along with home invasions, prowling, and stalking his victims. His signature methods are disturbingly sadistic. He possibly preplanned several of his attacks and demonstrated special intelligence that may have been due to military training. Although his identity had not been known at the time of the publication of I'll Be Gone in the Dark, he was shortly thereafter apprehended after DNA evidence was used to uncover his identity.
