Summary
Anselmi woke Lorenzo, phoning to say Monica was coming to pick him up. Monica drove him to Anselmi’s, to collect Lula’s keys. In the car she tried to talk about Lula and how “alone” she had been, but Lorenzo turned up the music (83). On the balcony of Anselmi’s apartment, she talked about the city below, but Lorenzo was nervous at being so high up. Inside the apartment he noticed that Lula was prominent in some of the pictures on the walls, but the more recent pictures featured Monica instead. Monica had to deal with Anselmi on the phone so Lorenzo helped her out by hanging laundry out to dry.
On page 89, Monica dropped Lorenzo off with his mother’s friend, the coffin-maker and undertaker Viarengo, who showed him round his ranch. There were hundreds of coffins, and Viarengo encouraged Lorenzo...
