Summary

In the first two pages prior to Chapter 1, the first person narrator Elisha, often referred to as Ellie, wakes out of a deep sleep when her mother calls her. She tells her mother, Marion, she has had a dream about Miah, but that she cannot remember all of it. Marion encourages her daughter to remember what she can (2). The chapters that follow act as an account reconstructed from Ellie's dreams and memory.

In Chapter 1, the narrative shifts to third person and follows Jeremiah Roselind. Leaving his home borough in Brooklyn, New York, Jeremiah sets out to play basketball with his fellow African-American friends. On his way to the court, Miah thinks about his basketball team at his new prep school Percy Academy.
