Summary
After sleeping with her husband, the mother of the twins thinks about the past. For years, she was ashamed of her inability to have children. After undergoing procedures and giving birth to the twins and her daughter, their marital dynamic improved. She touches her husband, basking in the pleasure of the moment.
In the morning, the narrator noticed that “Michael had left the broken clay figure behind” (229). While searching for glue to mend it, she found the clinic leaflets.
At work, she recalled the afternoon she and Michael had spent together. After walking around, visiting parks and galleries, they went out for soup. They talked about their scariest experiences. She considered sharing the day of the accident, but it did not count because it was something she had seen and not something that had “really happened to [her]” (232).
