Summary
The old man and his wife visit their son and daughter-in-law for breakfast. The father calls for the twins. Their sister is “waving a ribbon” in the bedroom (114). Outside, a man paints a window frame. In 17, the father brushes his daughter’s hair, wondering if she remembers her mother’s death. Outside, the twins set up for cricket. The elderly couple stands “at the bus stop,” waiting to venture out for their anniversary (118).
While the narrator was thinking about what “to do next,” Sarah called (121). Sarah said she and their old classmates attended a party where a guy named Michael expressed interest in meeting the narrator. He wanted Sarah to give him her number. Michael was the brother of the boy who had lived in 18. Though she found this curious, the narrator said it was okay for Sarah to connect them. Not long later...
