Summary

The boy in 18 continues studying his things and “thinking about the girl” in 22 (55). He remembers the first time they met at a party. They “talked a lot, and laughed” and the boy knew he loved her (55). After that night, the girl showed no signs of remembering their evening together. He wrote his brother about what happened. The brother guessed the girl had been too drunk to recall the evening. He puts his things back into a jar and under a floorboard.

A boy draws a picture of the street. A little girl examines his paper. They discuss the image. In 20, the old man boils water and watches the twins make mischief in the street. Suddenly he cannot breathe.

The narrator could not sleep remembering that day. There was so much she had forgotten. She had “a guilty feeling” (63). She thought of the neighborhood people...
