Gender Identity
The author uses the theme of gender to allow for Amanda to become her true self and find acceptance.
The novel shows a young woman starting a new high school after getting gender reassignment surgery. Amanda’s experiences at her new school are juxtaposed with her life as she transitioned from Andrew to Amanda.
From an early age, Amanda knew she was supposed to be a girl and felt betrayed by her body. She fantasized about going through puberty and becoming a woman. Because she knew that this was not going to happen, she attempted suicide. This act helped her get the help she needed and begin her transition.
As Amanda begins her life in a new town and new school, she remains concerned about whether or not she will be accepted if people find out. She is reluctant to tell anyone. Eventually, she confides...
