Florida

The majority of the short stories in the collection are set in Florida. When Trelawny's parents leave Jamaica, they settle in the Miami-Dade region. Their house is located in the Cutler Ridge neighborhood. After Hurricane Andrew destroys their home, the family temporarily relocates to Broward County. Throughout their time here, Trelawny is convinced he will soon be leaving. His father and brother are fixing up their old house, and he is desperate to return home. However, once the house is finished, only Topper and Delano leave. Trelawny remains with his mother.

After college, Trelawny returns to Florida. His mother moved back to Kingston. Trelawny lives with his father and brother temporarily. This arrangement does not last, as Topper kicks Trelawny out. Some time later, Trelawny ends up moving in with his brother.
