Summary

In “If I Survive You,” Trelawny and Delano are living in Topper’s Cutler Bay house together. Because Delano “hasn’t paid rent in years,” Topper tells Trelawny Delano is “killing” him (203). He “can’t pay mortgage” on two houses (203). Trelawny tells Topper to kick Delano out. Instead, Topper suggests that Trelawny buy the house for $11, 698 (205). Trelawny immediately says no.

However, “in the week following,” Trelawny reconsiders (206). If he buys the house, he and his girlfriend Jelly will have a home. Then they can kick Delano out. Delano’s irresponsibility has been annoying Jelly. Jelly, however, has no interest in owning the house, which is in disrepair. Her parents also disapprove of Trelawny. She says they will loan her “money for a house” if she promises to leave him (211). Trelawny becomes determined to buy the house.
