Summary

At 10:40 p.m. out-of-body Mia runs to the hospital’s pediatric unit looking frantically for Teddy, even though she knows she will not find him there. Returning to the ICU, she watches as “live” Mia enters a crisis and eventually is wheeled off for emergency surgery. She begins to wonder what it would be like if she stayed. She reflects on the only funeral she has ever attended, which was for a musician friend of her parents and Adam, who had died suddenly at age thirty-two. Afterward, there had been a discussion about what each person would like for his or her own funeral. Mia wonders if her parents’ funeral will also be hers.
