Summary
Wonna narrates the Chapter 12. She is halfway through her pregnancy and the baby is still alive. She negotiates with the universe and promises to give up cigarettes, diet pills, and drinking if the baby is born. She gets angry with her husband and speaks to him with the same sort of acidity that her grandmother used to use on her. She is hesitant to tell her work that she is pregnant. When she does, her boss tells her that they can only spare three months of maternity leave for her. If she takes more, she will be fired. Wonna panics because that would mean she must hire a nanny for nine months before her baby is old enough to go to the state-sponsored daycare. She goes home and finds her husband home early. He admits that he lost his job two months ago...
