Summary
In Chapter 32, Virgil rewrites a copy of his will in October 1960, shortly before the presidential election. He quietly passes away a few weeks later, and there is a small but meaningful funeral service at his desired burial spot on the family farm. Emily, Matanni, and Icy go into town for the election a few days later. When Virgil’s desired candidate, John Kennedy, wins, Icy sees Matanni go out to Patanni’s grave to tell him the good news. A few days later, Icy makes breakfast in bed for Matanni. Later, Icy goes for a long walk, when she uncharacteristically decides to go to Mamie Tillman’s house. When Icy sees a small cross, to commemorate Mamie’s lost baby, Icy begins to weep deeply.
