Chapter 5, Tunnel Summary
The Pogodin has surfaced so that the crew can fasten cases containing the diving gear to the aerial antenna. At the same time, Harry leads his team to the chasm that swallowed his snowmobile, convinced that this is the top section of the hole Timoshenko described. Harry believes this hole and the unusual pattern of ice beyond it were caused by lava released during the tsunami. When they reach the crevasse Harry climbs into it and begins to search for the hole. Harry finds it at the end of a narrow tunnel. Underneath the iceberg, the Pogodin positions itself under the hole. They deploy the aerial antenna and extend it as far as it will reach.
When the aerial antenna's balloon breaks the surface of the hole, Harry drags the cases onto the ice and instructs his team to begin dressing...
