Chapter 4, Night Summary

The Pogodin has arrived at the iceberg and has surfaced to find a place where they might land rafts in order to send men up the side of the iceberg to rescue the scientists. Unfortunately, there are no shelves or outcroppings on the side that is best protected from the choppy seas and the other side of the iceberg offers a few shelves, but the water is too choppy for the submarine to remain on a steady course with the iceberg. Gorov considers using a breeches buoy despite warnings from Zhukov that it would be too dangerous for both the men and the sub. Gorov then orders Timoshenko to contact the scientists and inform them of his plan.
