Point of View

This novel is written in first person singular from the perspective of 17-year-old Ben, a non-binary teenager. Throughout the novel, through dialogue and narration, Ben illustrates their thoughts and opinions about their situation as a nonbinary individual. The narration embodies illustrations and expressions of Ben’s thoughts and opinions and will often act as a means of Ben’s inner dialogue. For example, during a conversation with their Mom, Ben says ““No, just a lot going on.” Again, not a total lie. Is it really even a lie if I’m just withholding certain information?” (1). This narrative tool is used throughout the novel as a way of allowing the reader access into Ben’s personal thoughts, ideas, and emotions, but it also allows us to see the ways in which Ben is growing and changing.
