Summary

The final scene of the play opens in Kiguunda’s home about two weeks after the incident at Kioi’s house. The house has reverted to its prior appearance, but the board with the inscription “Christ is the Head” still hangs in the place where the title-deed used to hang (104). Wangeci is upset and seeking Njooki’s comfort because she thinks that Gathoni has run away and become a barmaid. Njooki tells her not to blame herself, as many parents have “not put much effort in the education of our girls” (105). She sings an old song about the differences between men and women, but comments that the song forgets that a home belongs to both “man and woman” and that the country “belongs to boys and girls” (105). She reminds Wangeci that many women died in the struggle for independence.
