Summary
Chapter 23, which returns to the third- person point of view, is set in Berlin in 1925. Tanya gives Anna back the Imperial photo album while the two are having a drink together. Tanya also gives her the paper knife that Gilliard took from Anna at the train station at Ekaterinburg. It takes Anna a moment to recognize the photo album. Tanya tells her the story of how Gilliard told Tanya that he had always felt bad for taking it from Anna. He feared he had taken away her only form of protection. Anna had been reconnected with Gleb and Tanya three years earlier when they visited her a Maria von Kleist’s home.
A week before she sees Tanya and Gleb again, Anna pretends to be asleep as the Baron and Maria drove her home from the asylum. Maria comments that they are...
