Summary
Chapter 14 returns to the first-person point of view of Anastasia. Gillard punishes Anastasia when he thinks she is sleeping in class. In reality, she is closing her eyes because Gleb had been shining light into them using a mirror. Gillard accuses Anastasia of lying. She lashes out at his accusation. In punishment for her anger, Gillard makes Anastasia carry a bucket of entrails to a refuse pit and empty it. Tomas recuses her by carrying and emptying the bucket for her.
Anastasia notes that as time has passed, the lines between the Romanovs and some guards, like Tomas, have blurred. Anastasia and Tomas, find Maria, for instance, whispering with a guard named Ivan when they walk back into the house. Anastasia notices her sister’s look is one of adoration.
