Letters
The letters represent an extension of Chris’ mind and her need to be honest and reflect on experiences in her life. Because she sees herself as equal to Dick, or at least wants to prove herself as his equal, she is able to write to him and be honest and direct about herself. The letters are Chris’ way of coming to terms with letting go of who she has been thus far in her life.
Fax
The fax represents the immediacy of being able to contact someone. The letters are a more intimate expression than talking to someone on the phone. The fastest way from the letter to get to the recipient is by fax (in the time prior to email). Chris and Sylvère consider faxing, but end up not because it would involve Dick too quickly into what they are experiencing emotionally.
