The Fly
The fly symbolizes situational irony. The fly interrupts the quiet stillness of the room with its noisy, erratic buzzing – a stark contrast to the silence and motionlessness of the mourners. The mourners are tense as they eagerly await the arrival of the “King,” but instead, an ordinary fly appears just before the speaker slips into a peaceful, anti-climactic death. The dull reality of the speaker’s death is a drastic contrast to the mourners’ expectations.
The King
The king symbolizes power. It can be argued he is the king of heaven, or God. Some scholars believe he represents Jesus Christ. He may also be a personified version of death itself. The context in which the king is mentioned – as someone the mourners hope to see – strongly supports the notion that the king is God or a Christ-like figure.
