The Granby School
Much of the novel takes place in and around the Granby School, an elite boarding school in New Hampshire. Many of the students at Granby are wealthy, privileged, and white. Bodie attends Granby as a high schooler and feels a deep sense of alienation towards many of her fellow students. During her junior year, she and Thalia Keith are roommates; a year later, Thalia is murdered under mysterious circumstances. The Granby administration encourages the police not to look at faculty and students as potential suspects. In this way, Makkai reveals the depth of the privilege—and discrimination—that exists at Granby.
