Summary

Chapter 7 is titled “The Swallowing of Secrets.” Harun hears Freya running from the house calling Nathaniel's name. Harun and his brother Abdullah are the only ones remaining at the table, and Abdullah will not look at Harun. Harun had expected his family to turn him out, but their rejection hurts just the same. Harun picks up Nathaniel's backpack and leaves the house. He knows Freya loves Nathaniel, just as he fell in love with James when they met. Freya returns to Harun's house. Halima feels terrible that she suspected this but still let Harun face it alone. Halima drives them around in search of Harun and Nathaniel for a while, then exchanges phone numbers and promises to keep in touch. She predicts her parents will eventually accept Harun. Freya feels the odds of finding either of them again are slim.
