The Heart
The heart symbolizes the connection between the lovers in the poem. It is the opening and guiding symbol throughout. The heart is one of the most ubiquitous poetic symbols in literary history, usually used to represent all of a person’s emotional, psychological, and even physical being. Here, hearts are the agents of love, as two hearts come together in one – “i carry your heart with me(i carry it in / my heart)” (1-2). Beyond the physical image of one heart fitting inside another, the poem presents the symbolic implication of two lovers combining their psyches into one, all-consuming and powerful.
