Summary

In Chapter 74, “The Story,” Margaret whispers “through the veil” (243) to Jack that he is not the same as he was when they were in love.

In Chapter 75, “The Regiment,” summer is ending and the H.H. Bedford will sail. Margaret sees herself in a mirror and promises to reach through the veil. The girls and boys board the boat and they sail past Shady Bluff. Margaret hears a girl call Shady Bluff a haunted house.

In Chapter 76, “The Veil,” Nisreen, Flor, and Rose are on the boat and Nisreen asks Margaret what they should do. Margaret is in front of Jack and puts her hands around Jack’s throat, but Jack is fine and Margaret is dead.

Chapter 77, “The Burial,” finds Margaret coming through the veil, but Jack is not in front of her. Margaret thinks about why she cannot kill Jack.
