Summary

Chapter 56, “The Absence,” opens with Flor and Nisreen having not returned. Margaret waits for Rose and thinks about how enough of her secret is out to hurt them. Margaret does not see Rose until after taps when Rose confronts the lieutenant. Rose suggests that someone sent Flor away like they did Margaret last summer. The lieutenant explains that Margaret’s parents withdrew Margaret from Marshall. As Rose and lieutenant talk around what they know happened last summer, Margaret begins to remember. Margaret can remember begging her parents to not make Margaret keep the pregnancy and then Margaret remembers the storm.

Chapter 57, “The Storm,” takes Margaret back to the previous summer. Margaret threatened Jack with exposing their relationship. Jack asked Margaret to trust him and he took her onto a wherry and to Shady Bluff.
