Summary
Eliza writes to her sister, updating her on her “evenings with the gentleman boarder Jack” (98). He has started bringing her “opium of a fine grade,” which helps with “sleep, baths, reading the scripture, and staring” at old photographs (98). Although Jack assures her he has “a lot to offer as a man,” Eliza remains skeptical (98). What she dislikes most about Jack is “the way he is around Ofelia” (99). He seems bothered that Eliza lets Ofelia stay overnight if “it’s more convenient for her” (100).
