Summary

The next section is titled “Before the Storm.” Tilla scrubs her clothing the next day. Diana pushes Tilla into saying she will go to the dance that evening. Tilla gives in when faced with the other option of staying home with Herma. Diana and Zory are selling snacks and drinks to raise money for the church. Tilla agrees to help. As Tilla, Zory, and Diana walk to the dance, Diana says Herma's action with the clothes the previous night was “extreme.” Zory asks if Herma has shown her dislike in other ways. Tilla reveals she comes into the bedroom to clean very early every morning. During the conversation, Tilla learns Junior has cancer and has become increasingly bitter since the diagnosis.
