The Veil
While the townspeople assume the Witch’s veil is a symbol of her mourning, it actually serves as a symbol of protection. Although the Witch does begin wearing the veil after her mother’s death, this is also at the same time she first begins to leave her home and make appearances in the town. The Witch’s position as a transgender woman makes her vulnerable, as people like Munra find this aspect of her life disagreeable. Thus, the veil allows the Witch to hide herself, as it serves as a barrier between her and the townspeople.
