Summary
Chapter 29 is titled “In the Pines.” The chapter returns to French's perspective. French continues to try to figure out how to resolve this situation. His mother had encouraged French and Mitch to be hopeful. When French hoped he would someday attend a good school with kind teachers and colorful classrooms. His mother would drive him to be specific, such as giving his teacher a name and imagining the number of swings on the playground. The only problem with this kind of hope is that it always ends. Mitch's goal is to bring down the entire network smuggling people into the United States. Mitch wants to know more about Rose. Mitch downplays their relationship.
