Summary
Chapter 19 is titled “Moccassin Telegraph,” and it is from French's perspective. The others working in the kitchen continue to ignore French so that his instructions are the only words spoken. He learns the names of those in the isolation ward. Though he knows he would be punished, he calls these people by name and begins to quietly interact with them. One day, someone hands him a napkin. Thinking this is just their effort to give him something in return for his effort at kindness, he puts the napkins in his pocket. In his room later, he prepares to throw them away but discovers the inmates have written messages on them using food or even blood. Some are names and addresses with short messages. Some are prayers or journal entries. Using the ink pen, he makes a hole in his mattress, folds the napkins...
