Summary
Chapter 5 is titled “Chi Boy's Coming-To Story.” Chi Boy feels the weight of responsibility for his unborn child. Since he can do very little for Wab, he does whatever he can, such as rubbing her feet. While Wab sleeps, Chi Boy tells the baby his story. He was in a foster home where other boys were often mean. He was happier in the group home which had a door that locked. Some youngsters began to disappear from school, but no one looked for them. One day, Chi Boy left. Some men chased him, and Chi Boy sought help from a farmer who shot him in the leg. He found an old camper in the woods and decided to rest and heal. He discovered a very old woman named Minerva was actually alive in there. He and Minerva set out together. They soon encountered...
