Summary
At the start of Chapter 29, Beauty contemplates how she has more possessions now than she has ever had before. The few things that she brought with her got strewn across the streets during the Soweto uprising and she was unable to retrieve them. Maggie gives Beauty a chain and pendant depicting a holy man carrying a baby across water. She tells Beauty that she only gives these presents to people she truly considers friends and Beauty is touched by the gesture. The back of the pendant is engraved with the word ‘believe’.
Maggie tells Beauty that she will get in contact when she hears news of Nomsa, and Beauty tells the reader that she has been trying to make friends with everyone she meets in the hopes of building connections and gaining information regarding Nomsa’s whereabouts. She is due to start her...
