Summary
In Chapter 21, Robin answers the door expecting Morrie, but sees a strange woman instead who asks if Edith is home. Robin tells her Edith has gone to the shop, remembering that she is not meant to speak to strangers. The woman knows Robin’s name and the names of her parents and introduces herself as “Tannie (auntie) Wilhelmina” (140). When asked if she likes Edith, Robin responds that Edith let her drink a brandy and coke once, to Wilhelmina’s horror.
Edith arrives home and asks if she can help with something. Wilhelmina explains that she is a social worker. Edith accuses her of being a busybody and tells her to call to make an appointment next time, instead of just showing up. When she closes the door on Wilhelmina and turns around, the notices a row of empty wine bottles and is grateful...
