Summary
In Chapter 3, a red ant crawls up Robin’s arm and bites her while she and Cat are doing “surveillance” (19) on a group of boys from their school who are playing on a mound of sand leftover from nearby mining. Robin gets angry at Cat for choosing a bad position to spy from. She wants to observe the boys in the hopes of learning about their group, “the Afrikaner Boy Gang” or “Die Boerseun Bende” (21). Robin does not have high hopes of being accepted into their club as she is a girl and is not Afrikaans.
Robin talks about how she only allowed Cat to come with her on the condition that she did not whine too much, and notes that she should have stipulated that Cat had to find better hiding positions too. The twins watch the boys set up a series...
