Mayfly and Albatross

Mayfly and albatross are the terms that Hendrich and others use to describe normal humans and those with Tom's condition. The word mayfly is symbolic for the short number of years in a normal human life. The albatross was once believed to live a very long life, which is why Hendrich named his organization the Albatross Society. Tom is an albatross.

Albas

"Albas" is the nickname for members of the Albatross Society, a symbol of the long lives experienced by Tom and those like him. The fact that there is a nickname is a symbol of the need to identify and define.

The Coin

The coin Marion gave Tom is a symbol of their love and relationship. The fact that Tom continues to carry it is a symbol of his love and his hope that they might someday reunite. When they do reunite, he...
