Tom spends a lot of time in London over the centuries which makes this a more complicated setting. Tom remembers the places that existed when he lived there in centuries past, including the house where Rose lived when she died. Many of these hold such incredible nostalgia that he becomes melancholy and has trouble living in the present.
France
Tom was born in France but left because of religious persecution. Tom returned to Paris during the 1920s, which is where Camille first saw his photo. Paris in the 20s was a good place for Tom because everyone accepted intense relationships without deep commitments. The final scene of the novel takes place in France as well. This is a glimpse of the future as Tom sees it when he is talking with Camille, and it takes place in a forest.
