Summary
Part Five is titled The Return. The first chapter is titled “Plymouth, England, 1768.” Tom begged Captain Samuel Wallis and Tobias Furneaux for a job aboard the ship the Dolphin. He cited his musical ability and his proficiency at languages and sailing as a reason for Wallis to hire him.
The next chapter is titled “London, now.” Camille continues to ignore Tom. He makes plans to go to Australia in a week and considers moving on after that. At the market, Tom encounters Daphne, the school principal who hired him as a teacher. Daphne has noticed that Camille seems attracted to Tom and that Camille has become withdrawn. Tom dismisses it.
