The Car

The car belonging to Mama becomes the family's home when they get evicted from their apartment after Georgina's dad abandons them. The car is old and smelly. It rattles and jerks for most of the story and even stops running until Mookie secretly repairs it.

Mama makes the best of the car situation by tying a string down the middle of the back seat to the front so the kids can hang a towel on it to give them some semblance of privacy. The car is never in one place too long so the family can avoid loitering laws. Whenever Mama is at work, the kids are supposed to be locked safely in the car.
