Summary

In Chapter 1, Georgina narrated her own story, as she reflected on events that happened to her and her family. Georgina’s father walked out on the family, leaving Georgina’s mother, brother (Toby), and herself to get evicted. With nowhere to go, they lived in the family car. The situation embarrassed Georgina and she wanted to keep her best friend, Luanne, from finding out her circumstances. One day on the bus, Georgina explained away Toby’s crying as an earache, even though he was crying because they were homeless. That only made Luanne question why her mother would send him to school if he was sick.
