Summary
In Chapter 28, after caring for Mark for the next five days, Louise returned to San Francisco. She expected Poppy to come running to greet her, but she was met only by Ian. When Louise went to Poppy’s bedroom, Poppy was wearing a Pupkin puppet and greeted Louise the same way Pupkin always did: “Kakawewe! . . . How do dee do?” (306).
In Chapter 29, as Louise had a flashback to how she had to cut off part of Mark’s arm to separate him from Pupkin, Ian explained that Poppy had made the puppet with his mother’s help, but the design had been Poppy’s idea. Louise’s body went numb and she wet herself as Poppy continued to talk in Pupkin’s voice.
