Summary
In Chapter 1, when Louise Joyner found out she was pregnant, she believed that becoming a mother would bring her and her own mother, Nancy, closer. Louise, who was the responsible child, had always resented the way her parents catered to her younger brother Mark even though he never achieved anything.
In Chapter 2, Louise tried to convince her five-year-old daughter, Poppy, that she would not like the book The Velveteen Rabbit. Louise’s mother believed it Louise’s favorite book, but it was not, it had caused Louise to have nightmares when she was a child. Louise was glad for the interruption when her phone rang, but was afraid when she saw the call was coming from Mark. Mark stumblingly told her that their parents had been killed in a car accident.
