Doubt
The Rastafari way of life is a mixture of a cultural and religious belief. Their beliefs are based on a specific interpretation of the Bible and centered around a monotheistic belief in a single God, Jah, who lives in a partial form within each individual. As Safiya grows in her academic pursuits and desires to fit in with her peers, she pulls away from the Rasta religion. It is incompatible with women working outside of the home and sharing their opinions, especially if they contrast with the opinions of men, and her belief in God is not strong enough to silence the doubts that this is not the lifestyle she would choose for herself.
