White House

White House is a small fishing village on the coast of Jamaica. Safiya lived there until the age of five with her family. The village belonged to the fishermen of her mother’s family. The village is remote and a far cry from the tourist-heavy parts of the island.

Countryside

Howie grew up in the hilly countryside, always overlooking the sea. The countryside setting is a character in and of itself, imbuing Howie with a feeling of uncompromising obstinacy. He is firm in a way people from the seaside are not, and he slowly takes away the easy fluid way of existing in the world that Esther had before meeting him.
