Summary
In Chapter 21, Jonas pulls the car over and meditates on the midwestern scenery, imagining his parents witnessing the same. Mariam must have considered her options, how she might escape Yosef.
In Chapter 22, distorted versions of Jonas's story began circulating campus. Despite the students’ contortions, Jonas felt his story had taught a valuable lesson to his students. One day, the dean called Jonas to his office. Anxious, Jonas expected a reprimand. The dean, however, commended his story, remarking on its value, regardless of its falsity. He then said he heard Jonas told Andrew he was being promoted. The dean explained Jonas would not be promoted, asking why Jonas lied. Jonas said he told Andrew no such thing, suggesting that Andrew may have misunderstood what he said.
At home, Jonas panicked. When Angela returned, he told her they were leaving for the weekend. Once out...
